Utility / Power Make-Ready Designer/Project manager - Central NY

Job Title: Utility / Power Make-Ready Designer/Project manager
Location: Central NY area

We are currently recruiting a full-time Utility / Power Make-Ready Designer - Electrical to be based in the Central NY area! – Preferably Syracuse/Rochester/Buffalo NY  (Some travel is required within the Region)

As the Utility / Power Make-Ready Designer you will be involved in design/redesign of electrical/power components on Telephone/Utility Power poles. You should have a very strong understanding of National Electrical Safety Code (NESC codes), as they relate to power equipment (Transformers etc.) and will be responsible for design recommendations and associated construction activities for the OSP build project, aerial and underground. You will be involved in providing the designs and training of Junior personnel.


Initially you’ll be in the field training crews and doing the fieldwork. As the project progresses, you’ll then take more of an office/managerial role, overseeing, and coordinating field work. In addition to doing QA/QC of field work and teeing up and handing it off to the design team. You’ll be reporting to the various stakeholders, reporting to the client, overseeing schedule and submission of the work.


Role:
  • Apply engineering design standards to aerial and underground pole/line cable including Joint -Use Design, Make Ready, Pole Replacement, Primary Service, Reliability/Maintenance Design, Upgrades, Voltage Conversion, and Tie Lines
  • You’ll take the Field Survey information and provide Make Ready Engineering/Power Distribution Engineering design recommendations to the Power/Utility Company
  • You will create analysis reports for clients to ensure that the new / proposed  designs meet the appropriate power/ loading and clearance requirements.
  • Facilitate Pole Replacement design as it relates to power equipment.
  • Monitor the progress of OSP projects and report any issues to project managers and stakeholders.
  • Train crews and Manage schedules. Liaise with the client.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and contribute to the development of best practices for OSP power installation.

What will catch our eye: 
  • 5+ years of industry experience in Make Ready Engineering or Power Distribution Engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of National Electrical Safety Code (NESC)
  • Knowledge of drafting or modeling software such as : AutoCAD/ARCGIS, SPIDAcalc, O-Calc, Katapult or similar.
  • Previous experience with National Grid. -STORMS database
  • Previous experience with OSP/CATV (outside plant)
  • Inspecting quality and recording field records – including review of OTDR results and As-built drawings.
  • OSP experience and/or training; previous telecommunications experience a must.
  • Experienced in construction practices of aerial (communications & power make ready, attachments, etc.) 
  • Pole loading analysis is a plus but can be taught.
  • Knowledge of As-Builts, redlines and project inspection guidelines.
